Haircut!!

Day 30 - 30th January 2013

As usual, nothing much happened today. I had a massive coughing fit in the bus stop before I got to college, got to college, had a couple of lessons, started my essay for my EPQ, and came home. Revelation: Grace only lives round the corner from me! I thought she lived near Stourbridge, but turns out he lives on Woodland Road! :o
Day 30 - 30th January 2013

James had to have his haircut today(by me), because it was WAY too long xD

I do have a photo, but I want to go to bed, and the computer is really not co-operating (I've already had to swap laptops once), so I'll update with photos in the morning, as well as a photo of my completion of the crochet something wearable #28 ;)

Mainly looking forward.

Day 30 - 30th January 2013

Not an awful lot happened today. I coughed my way through the night (James just moved to the other end of the bed, as opposed to another bed altogether!) and got up bright and early for college. Had a nutritious donut for breakfast, had english, then geography. I got very angry about something we were looking at in geography, but I'm not sure if anything will come of it....hopefully it will. I went to a lecture about child trafficking in the cocoa industry, had a veggie samosa, bought my train ticket to London for next week. Then, I got home and finally solved my problem with photographing my EPQ, which means I can test it on Saturday and then arrange the actual shoot for next Tuesday...so Yay!

I've also been planning James' 2 year anniversary/valentines day present...I have something really exciting planned (well....maybe not exciting...) and I'm looking forward to getting started on that. I always leave it until the last minute because I'm more excited about my birthday :3 In 2011, when me and James got together it was much more stressful; my birthday on the 10th, we got together on the 13th, first valentines day together on the 14th, then my mum died on the 17th...pretty stressful!

Speaking of which, I also read mum's letters today, which made me cry loads, but I didn't really feel sad, I felt really happy. I feel like I've had such a productive and proactive and achievement-ful time recently, all I felt from reading her letters was that she was proud of everything I was doing. There's a bit in there where she says to 'remember that I love to find things that make me happy' and I feel like that is precisely how I feel at the moment. That no matter what, I want to be happy. And anything that's making me unhappy isn't worth the time.

These photos were taken on my walk home from college, the house is on my road, but I never really noticed how odd it looks, just standing there as a single semi-detatched house. I love the differences between the doors and windows on each side.

This moss was just pretty really. I could smell the first whiffs of spring in the air, the sky was blue, and I felt like I could literally see the plants growing before my eyes. This moss grows on a really low front wall on my walk home, and it's just a complete blanket of it, and it's beautiful.

Coughing, EPQ, Crochet and billboards.

Day 29 - 29th January 2013

Today: I actually managed to get into college, despite a disgusting cough, and a red raw sore throat from coughing constantly. I had a meeting with Jo about my EPQ, but my camera was refusing to co-operate and so I couldn't show her photos of my garment. Then it was knitting club, and I finished my square for knit-a-square, and started crocheting (yay #27!). Then I came home, and I sent out a message to organise my birthday :) We're going to have a grown-up treasure hunt, and I am SO excited :3

The photo today is a peely off billboard poster that (boring) Dan pointed out on the way to the bus station. He thought I was a bit strange when I made him wait while I took a photo, but he did tell me I was 'interesting' ;)

Here's a picture of my attempted hat (4th attempt ;) )

Ill, ill and ill.

Day 28 - 28th January 2013

I have done absolutely nothing today, because I have felt quite frankly awful. James had to go sleep in Harry's bed last night because I was making him sweat. It's a bad cold layered with my existing sinus infection. I had to cancel my blood donation on Wednesday, and I also phoned to say I could go to the photo shoot for the youth awards.

This was my lunch: Egg on chorizo on toast. It was delish. The photo should also be rotated but my laptop is about to run out of battery :)

Box room tidying.

Day 27 - 27th January 2013

Today, I woke up feeling incredibly ill (nothing too serious, just a touch of man flu mixed with my sinus infection), and then thought it would be a good idea to tidy the incredibly dusty box-room, which really didn't do my sinuses any good. But it felt good to do, and I managed to move the airbeds out from under my bed, and all my college notes from last year. We found some cool stuff too, like Lily's blanket with sleeves and a zebra's tooth. It's always so fun tidying in our house, there's always some cool stuff to find.

I didn't think to take a before picture, so the after picture really isn't very impressive, but basically before, you couldn't even enter the room!

Notebender's, protesters, burgers and Becky's carvery.

Day 26 - 26th January 2013

Super quick post because I'm ready for bed, will elaborate in the morning.

We went to Birmingham, watched some music, saw some protesters, ate a burger, came back, got ready in half an hour, went out for a carvery, got the bus home and walked Becky back in the rain carrying a sledge full of presents and a little tree.

Update: I said I'd elaborate, but I don't have much time, so I'll just elaborate a little bit. We only just caught the 141 to Birmingham in time, because of the icy pavements (it was literally like an ice rink), but we did catch it. Me and Joe had a good time playing eye spy with Johnnie, and trying to help him see himself in the camera. The music was 'The Notebenders', who were a kind of jazz band (I think?). They were really good, although I preferred the second half (they did 'My baby don't care', and 'RESPECT'). Johnnie dancing to respect was absolutely hilarious. It was quite funny because there was an EVF (English Voluntary Force) protest just outside, and the band was about 70% black, with a totally multicultural audience. It was quite reassuring that there was only about 40 of them, and everyone we saw looked at them like they were ignorant idiots. Then we went to the Handmade Burger Company (which James was very cross about, because he wanted to go with me), and I had a VERY hot peri peri chicken burger. It was delicious but my mouth was on fire! Then I rushed home, got ready (shower, hair wash, find clothes which not everyone has already seen before), and went to the carvery for Becky's meal. It was really fun, although we had to take her sledge, tree, and all her other presents home on the bus, in the rain.

Doctors, reply and nothing!

Day 25 - 25th January 2013

I went to the doctors this morning, and sad times... I have a sinus infection. I haven't felt 100% for ages and so at least now I have some antibiotics to make me feel better. It does mean however, that I can't give blood next Wednesday, even though I'm booked in, because you're not supposed to if you've  taken antibiotics in the last 7 days. I also asked about getting tested for the breast cancer gene, and luckily, me and Lily aren't at a big enough risk to worry about it. I'm still not very happy about taking the pill though, so I'm looking into alternatives.

Also, one of the councillors that I emailed yesterday about the DPA phoned me back this morning, which I was very impressed by. He assured me that he is fully behind the DPA, and he's going to try to limit cuts. He's not going to be able to stop it altogether but at least he's not against it.

I spent the rest of the day at college, and unfortunately absolutely nothing interesting happened all day xD

Here's a picture of a little tree, that I'm giving to Becky for her birthday tomorrow (it was actually her birthday last week, but we're going for a meal tomorrow), along with a decorated sledge.

Bed sheets, pasta bake and TV

Day 24 - 24th January 2013

Not a lot happened today. I wrote an email to my local councillors about upcoming budget cuts. I have been invited to a debate tomorrow, but the organisers have cleverly organised it during college time, so I can't go. I also bought a little tree for Becky's birthday present, cooked a cheesy pasta bake with mushrooms and bacon (yum!) and put clean sheets on my bed for the first time in about 6 months (sadly not an exaggeration). It looks so pretty I had to take a picture :) Now I'm snuggled up ready for new Big Bang Theory, the new New Normal and new Two Broke Girls. Yay!

Also, I'm going to stop labelling these posts with #3 etc., and instead name them according to their content.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months

Phew...close call there when I dropped my new camera and the lens stopped shooshing in and out! It seems to have started working again now, although there's a click that wasn't there before :S

Relatively uneventful day today, but I came home to a letter from Dudley Council. It seems I have been nominated (by who???) for the Dudley Youth Awards! I'm short-listed for the 'Excellence Award', which is apparently for 'an extraordinary young person who shows courage, acts as a role model, is compassionate and is committed to their community.' Scary :S I'm assuming I've been nominated by someone at college, but it doesn't say, hopefully I'll find out on the night. I've got to go for a 'photo shoot' in February, for the programme, which will no doubt be awful.

I can only guess that my courageous act was shaving my hair off last year, although it's so long ago it doesn't really feel right to be accepting an award about it...I will though...partly because it should be a bit of extra publicity for the hospice, and partly because I like praise ;)

So to whoever nominated me: Thanks :) Much appreciated, and I hope I get to thank you in person.

In case it's too small to read, it begins:

Dear Ruby,
Congratulations! You have been short listed for the 9th annual Dudley Youth Awards!
You have been nominated for a Dudley Youth Award in the category of Excellence Award by someone who thinks you deserve an award, and I can now confirm that you have been successfully shortlisted.

Wow!

#91 Organise/be a part of a knitting/crochet/craft club.

Day 22 - 22nd January 2013

First meeting of the Witty Little Knitters was today! There was a slight mix up with rooms, but it all got sorted, and I've booked us a permanent room from now on. We're going to have a go at helping this charity, because it will be a good excercise for the majority of members, who only learnt to knit today. Hopefully, within a few weeks goals number 27, 28 and 29 can get done too!

I struggled into college this morning with a huge bin bag of wool I had been given, as well as a collection of knitting needles. It was well worth it though to see all these smiling faces :)

We had a great time xD

In other news, James gave me an early birthday present....an electric blanket! I'm sooo looking forward to using it at home, but I'm at his tonight where temperatures remain above freezing throughout the night, so I'm going to save it for tomorrow :3 Excited!!

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 21 - 21st January 2013

Snow day today! I didn't have the motivation to get up and go swimming, and then James had the good idea of re-introducing me to the Sims, which I love. So that was basically my entire day xD Apart from an exhausting trudge up Mucklow Hill, and a realisation of the gross underestimation of my possession of knitting needles, leading to an emergency message sent to my witty little knitters. So, #91 will be done by this time tomorrow! I will have photos of my lovely little group :3

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 20- 20th January 2013

House-bound for most of today due to snow. I sat around in my pyjamas in front of my sewing machine and finished the other side of my EPQ garment. I've got an aching back now, but I'm so glad it's nearly done. Then, I made a vest top with the remaining jersey. I didn't think to take any photos until it was dark, so my photos are a bit useless, so I've got a cute snowy shot of James instead. I walked down in the pouring(?) snow, and I've nicked his laptop to type this.

We're all hoping for a day off college and school tomorrow, we REALLY don't want a repeat of Friday (going into Stourbridge, only to spend the rest of the day trying to get back). It's still snowing quite heavily, and it has been all day. The roads are only clear along the tracks of the last car, even the main roads, and once all the slush is frozen it's going to be completely treacherous. I'm going to go swimming first thing (if I can bear to get up), and then assess the situation before I go in.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 19 - 19th January 2013

First let me recap on yesterday: We all went into college for 10, and it took me and James much longer than expected because of the snow. We didn't get in until quarter to 11, (25 minutes before the end of James' lesson) and I didn't have a lesson until 1:30. We were then told that college was closing at 11 15  because of a lack of students, so me and a collection of other people (James, Becky, Alastair, Sarah and Hannah) spent the next 4 hours or so trying to get back home.

On the way back, I was talking to Becky, and I found out that she'd never ever been sledging!! Coincidentally, it's her birthday tomorrow (the 20th), and I thought it would be lovely to take her before she's officially an adult. So today, me and James organised a little party of people to take her.

So, at about 3 o'clock, me, Maria, Alastair, Barnabus, Becky, James and Harry all made our way down to Leasowes golf course, and I have honestly never had so much fun in the snow! It was absolutely wonderful. There was an incident with 'Scruffy' the dog pulling Barnaby in the sledge, a huge hilarious snowball fight, and loads of great sledging. It was a truly memorable day :)

And they're off.....

I couldn't get one where she wasn't falling off!

Admittedly this was taken yesterday, but still, Yay!

Falling off again...

This was posed to make it look like she was actually going down the hill....shortly after, she fell off :)

The Gang ;)

In other news, I drank an entire mug of green tea this morning, and I really enjoyed it :) I made it much weaker, and added a tiny bit of demerera sugar, and it was delicious :)

Also, I started #57 today (go braless for a month), so we'll see how that goes...I'm a 32DD so they're not exactly tiny! I wish they were though!

Friday, 18 January 2013

#23 - Try green tea.

Done! Although I may have had a pointless trip to Stourbridge, I have at least got one goal done, and bought tofu for #20, although I don't think I'll be trying it today! I don't really like tea, but I'm gonna give this a go, and my dad says he'll drink it if I don't like it.

Update: It's ok....I'm not dead keen, but I'm gonna try it a few times in the following days to see if it grows on me :)

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

I have spent a total of 4 hours in exams today, broken up by 2 hours locked in the sports hall under lunchtime supervision...it was fun....NOT. I'm really shattered, and I'm slightly concerned about how I will have done in geography, since I really need to be getting good grades right now :S

But its not all bad...it's snowing! We've been forecast loads of snow, so we've all got our fingers crossed for a snow day tomorrow ;) I'm planning to take my sledge to college if we do have to go in. So now, I'm feeling relieved, cozy (but not quite enough...) and hungry, wondering what to make for dinner. C'est la vie, I have people I love and it's snowing outside; life doesn't get much sweeter.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

I'm so exhausted! I've had a full on day, revising for my exam tomorrow, and doing a sort of welcome evening for new people at college. It was all worth it though because I met two lovely people (Hi Tom and Mo) and I'm really looking forward to getting this exam out of the way. Yay!! Now to sleep in exam preparation ;)

REVISION!!

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 15 - 15th January 2013

Today, I had a ponytail!! It's getting on for a year since my head shave, and I've finally reached the ponytail stage!!

I've been thinking an awful lot about that girl I mentioned yesterday, Alice Pyne. I've been talking to a lot of people about  bone marrow donation, because that was one of her big goals: to get everyone in the world who can to be on the register. Although I do have certain reservations about unnaturally prolonging lives, my mum lived for 10 years with cancer thanks to various blood transfusions and surgeries, and I know for a fact that if I or one of my loved ones was unlucky enough to need a bone marrow transplant, I would want there to be people on the register to turn to. The same goes for blood, which has been an aim of mine for much longer. One of the reasons I hadn't thought about bone marrow donation until reading Alice's blog was that I didn't know anything about it!! One of her campaigns was to get greetings cards manufacturers to print information about bone marrow donation on their 18th birthday cards (the age you can join the register in the UK), and I really want to try and get more support for that, since I think at least it gives people the information. I'm not 18 yet, so I can't really begin practicing what I preach until February, but when I go to give blood on the 30th, I'm going to ask about joining the register. Look into the bone marrow register in your country!!

Day 14 - 14th January 2013

We've had snow here today!! Me and James treated ourselves to a lie-in until 8 o clock, since he had an exam and didn't have to be in until half one. I've found myself feeling thankful today, thankful for opportunities and friends and especially for food! With all this cold weather we're all feeling starving all the time! I saw a Tuscan bean soup on telly this morning (which contained spinach! Here I come #101!) which just looked PERFECT for this weather. Then I had a Hawaiian pizza for lunch with Alastair, which was a nice treat since I normally share with James, who doesn't approve of cooked fruit xD So today I have a few photos for you:

... just thought I'd mention the minimalist student... I'm really enjoying her blog at the moment, it really suits my current frame of mind, what with upcoming change in my life and everything.

Also, I read an article today about a girl my age who had Hodgkin's Lymphoma (I think), and her blog chronicling the completion of her bucket list. She died recently, having completed the last item on the list last year. This kind of thing really does help to put life into perspective, I love hearing inspirational stories like this. I've been thinking about her all day, but in a good way :)

Sunday, 13 January 2013

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

I woke up this morning later than I should have and mooched around for a bit at home in my pyjamas and dressing gown. Then James rang me and I said I'd meet him at his nan's at around 1. Then I very slowly proceded to get ready to go, and showered and put clean clothes on. I was then informed that all our guinea pigs needed cleaning out (by me of course), so I got all grubby hauling sacks of guinea pig poo around. Such fun!

Anyway, I eventually left, and James and I spent the day at his nan's, Lyn, who is absolutely magical and wonderful and feeds us loads and gives us hot chocolate with squirty cream... a lot of squirty cream.

Also, I got an email from my Dad's sister Lois, who invited me to go to this arty house in Norfolk with her, called Voewood, and I'm really excited xD So that's a nice thing to look forward to in the spring/summer.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 12 - 12th January 2013 (yesterday)
So, I didn't get up til around midday. Then James went home to spend time with his brother and I headed up into Birmingham to get fabric for my EPQ. I still need to consult with Jo what she thinks the best way to do it is, but at least I've got it.I went to the Fancy Silk Store near the Bullring Markets, and it is THE most amazing shop. I've been once before, but I'd forgotten just how much I love it. It is literally magical, I could live there. It is 4 floors of floor to ceiling bolts of fabric, it's a total Aladdin's cave for crafters.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling) (and a bit of a cop-out)

Oops, I fell off the wagon for a couple of days... guess I'll have to start #49 again from today! I have taken photos for the last 2 days, but for some bizarre reason blogger is being weird and doesn't want me to upload them....

Day 10 was a picture of a happy buddha in the window of a chinese takeaway in Oldswinford. I went up to the Hospice after college on Thursday to see everyone and tell them the good news about my offer. It always makes me feel very thoughtful and a little bit down when I visit the hospice, and this little guy really cheered me up :3 I'll update with a photo when blogger allows ;)

Day 11 was a picture of James very attractively licking an ice cream sundae we shared for lunch (at about 11 30 xD) We both had two exams yesterday (General studies and biology), so we were treating ourselves. It was a long day, but I'm glad its over and done with. I've just got geography to go, next Thursday.

Wednesday, 9 January 2013

#85. Make a list of at least 30 books I want to read and read them.

I finished Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie today. I found it very compelling and it had a fascinating storyline, but I have to confess I preferred Half of a Yellow Sun. I loved that one so much because the subject matter was something entirely alien to me; the Biafran War. This one was very good, and extremely well told, but it just didn't have the same ground-breaking feel to me as some other books have.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 9 - 9th January 2013

College again today :) We watched the hunger games last night before bed (James got it for christmas), and I don't know if it was that or trying to fit two normal sized people in a single bed, but I slept awfully last night. I had aching legs today from my first run attempt yesterday, but I forced myself to go again today, and I went round Leasowes, and it felt fantastic! I already feel like I can go further and breathe easier without walking. There was a downhill bit in the park when I felt like I was flying... it was magic :3 I'm planning to go swimming tomorrow to give my legs a rest ;) Also, plans for knitting club are  underway, and everyone's really excited. Other than that I've been revising and I also finished Purple Hibiscus (which was a lovely present from my Dad's girlfriend Jacquine), which was beautiful.

These are the spring bulbs coming up in the beds at college, (snowdrops?) I love this time of year when all the little shoots start pushing their way up out of the soil, it really feels like new life to me :3

Day 8 - 8th January 2013

Second day back at college today, getting slightly more worried about exams now, but I've still got time :) So today, I bought a shower curtain because it was really special and 'eccentric', and it was reduced to £2.49. I've hidden it in my pink suitcase, in the hope that I will find it when I'm packing for uni, and it will be a really nice surprise. I'm now hoping that I will have a shower with a curtain rail :3 I also got started on a few list items today:

  • #5 Run a marathon - I am notoriously unfit, so today I began my 'training' with a run of probably getting on for a km (of which I think I ran about 2/3). But you've gotta start somewhere right?
  • #30 Give Blood - The blood people were in Stourbridge Town Hall today, and although they didn't have any space today, I've just signed up to book myself in for the 30th, so hopefully that will all go according to plan :)
  • #35 Be able to do 50 consecutive push ups - I did 2 today! That is a 200% increase on yesterday!
  • #52 Get rid of any facebook friends who aren't real friends - I did this the other day! I'm just going to double check it before I cross it off.
  • #85 Books - In the process of reading Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozie Adichi.
  • #91 Organise/be a part of a knitting/crochet/craft club - I emailed my lovely English teacher Tim today, to ask if I could use his classroom for this very purpose.
Here's my photo, it's a night shot of lights at the top of my road tonight. I took it waiting for the bus to come to James'.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 7 - 7th January 2013

First day back at college today, and we're all busy revising ready for our exams beginning on Wednesday. I've got biology on Friday and geography next Wednesday, so I've spent all day revising like crazy. James had his guitar at college today because he was teaching his cousin early after college, and this is my friend Ho-Pan serenading us with some impressive Jack Johnson xD

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 6 - 6th January 2013

Today I started making my garment for my EPQ. I've designed a beautiful feathered poncho, which is going to look gorgeous, but is going to take forever to finish :) It probably took me 4 hours to do one side of it. But it's done, and it feels so good!

By the way, for those who don't know, EPQ stands for Extended Project Qualification, and mine is a textiles project, producing a campaign against child abuse, exploitation and especially poverty in the UK. It's going to be done using photography, and hopefully some very dramatic lighting, or that's the plan anyway :) The model is my sister's lovely friend, and I'll update with pictures when it's done :)

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 5 – 5th January 2013

Revision revision revision today, but we took a brief break to take a wonder round the park, and also to eat pizza and watch a Robin Hood xD I’ve got to go actually to watch the last episode!! Exciting :3

Friday, 4 January 2013

85. Make a list of at least 30 books I want to read and read them.

I actually read Life of Pi before the new year, but James bought it me for Christmas and I couldn't resist. Perks of being a wallflower came from James' Nan, and I loved it! I thought that having seen the film before did make some of the characters much stronger, particularly Patrick, but I didn't feel it was so important for Sam or Charlie. All in all, both were incredible, but quite frankly, I will never forget Life of Pi, it was completely mind-blowing for me.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 4 - 4th January 2013

So today me and Lily went charity shopping in Stourbridge, and we got some cool sturfff. But also....... I got an offer from Cambridge!! My Dad phoned me to tell me because he *accidentally* opened it, and he was so much more excited than I am! It was really sweet :3 I'm actually a little bit iffy about it because this means that me and James are definitely not going to the same uni, which I was half expecting, but I was counting on the 'not knowing' factor, to stop me from worrying... But that's just a minor problem, since I know that whatever happens we'll both be fine... and hey, they have trains right? Here I come free calls and student railcard!

Here's my photo of the day, we have a new skirt, new leggings, some trainers (for number 5 ;) ), a packet of surprise chilli jack pitta chips for James...... and my letter from Cambridge!

Day 3 - 3rd January 2013

Me, James and Joe went to Dudley Zoo today. None of us had been for a few years, and there were a few new bits and bobs that were really fun. There was a chimp that banged on the glass and scared us all out of our wits, we got to sit in a land rover with the lions, and we got to high five an orang-utan through the glass. Our agreed favourite part was a new indoor viewing area for the tigers, and they came up so close! It was fairly hard to get a nice photo because of the reflections in the glass, but I've edited this one so you can see the good half of it's face... and the reflection of a tree ;)
Also, we got two new leather sofa's today!

Six words: Tigers up close are so beautiful.

#3 - Take at least one photo every day for a year. #49 Keep a diary or blog every day for two months (six word journalling)

Day 2 - 2nd January 2013

I have taken a photo for today, but decided it was too private for the internet sooo... I'll post it in my private version of this blog.

Me and James didn't get up until 1 o'clock today! I guess we were recovering from our respective New Years activities! Neither of us went to sleep before 4 on New Year, so I think that could have something to do with it!

Six words: We didn't get up until 1!
